Tarrek El-Saadi is an undergraduate student triple majoring in Accounting, Economic Consulting, and Operations Management at the Kelley School of Business. Tarrek previously served in the United States Marine Corps.
What is your favorite part of being an accounting student at Kelley?
My favorite part about being an accounting student at Kelley is that instead of the program being focused on learning a strict set of rules to follow, the accounting professors do an incredible job of tying accounting into decision-making and the larger business perspective. For example, in Taxes and Decision Making, we learned how businesses can strategically structure their assets in order to minimize their tax liability, as well as how other business considerations may make it more favorable to suffer the higher tax liability.
Why did you choose to major in accounting?
I chose to major in accounting because it is regarded as the “language of business.” As I look to pursue a strategy role within an organization, I felt it necessary to first understand the fundamentals of business and how to communicate essential information to management.
Drawing on your experiences, what advice would you give to future Kelley Accounting students?
Sometimes the material can feel overwhelming. When it does, do not be afraid to reach out to your peers or your professor for help. The accounting professors and your peers all want to see you succeed, and nearly everyone is willing to take the time outside of class to help you understand a subject better. All you need to do is ask.
What are your plans for the future?
My current plans are to become a management or strategy consultant and pursue an MBA.
Please tell us about your favorite activities at Kelley and IU.
My favorite activities at Kelley and IU are getting involved with some of the numerous student organizations on campus, getting a workout in at the SRSC, taking advantage of all the networking and employer events each week, and going on a relaxing walk on one of the many pathways throughout campus.
What has been your favorite accounting class at Kelley?
My favorite accounting class at Kelley has been Intermediate Accounting I because it really began to demonstrate the impact of accounting in making management and strategic decisions for an organization. Also, Professor Hoffman is hilarious!
