Aramide Ogunmekan is an undergraduate student majoring in Accounting and International Business with a Minor in Music. Aramide expects to graduate in May 2024.
What is your favorite part of being an accounting student at Kelley?
My favorite parts of being an accounting major are the variety of unique opportunities available. I’ve been able to meet professors that have had incredible careers and are extremely open to sharing their experiences and giving advice. In addition, I’ve been able to explore possible career paths with some of the top researchers in the fields I’m interested in. I appreciate the amount of effort the accounting department puts into ensuring that students are not only informed of what they can do, but also have connections to people they can network with and get an idea of their real experiences. I also appreciate that as an accounting student, I’m given a chance to participate in programs and organizations that provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences, like the opportunity to study abroad for a semester.
Why did you choose to major in accounting?
I chose to major in accounting initially because it was the kind of work I wanted to do and was a field that closely matched my personality. Since taking more classes in my major, I’m choosing to pursue a career in accounting because it’s a dynamic and evolving field with significant opportunities for growth, and it brings considerable benefits to society.
Drawing on your experiences, what advice would you give to future Kelley Accounting students?
I would tell future Kelley accounting students not to feel limited because of their major. Instead, join clubs both in and outside of accounting to explore the full scope of your interests when considering your career. The field of accounting is much more varied than it seems. If you pursue the knowledge and opportunities that Kelly provides, you can find a path in accounting that is not only fulfilling but also fun.
What are your plans for the future?
Initially after graduation, I plan to work as an auditor in public accounting. From there, I plan to either work my way up in an accounting firm to the partner level, transition into an industry where I would take an internal audit or managerial role, or return to school and ultimately become an accounting professor.
Please tell us about your favorite activities at Kelley and IU.
My favorite activity in Kelley is my involvement in my professional fraternity, Mu Beta Lambda Business Fraternity, Inc. In MBL, I’ve had the opportunity to grow as a business professional in an environment of peers I can relate to and who have become family to me. My favorite activity at IU is being a vocalist in the IU Soul Revue. Being in this band provides a fantastic creative outlet and has granted me many incredible performance opportunities.
What has been your favorite accounting class at Kelley?
My favorite class at Kelley so far has been Intermediate Accounting I with Professor Ken Merkley. I appreciated how his approach to the class was modern, always keeping in mind current events and how they relate to our future in the accounting world. I really enjoyed the content, as I’ve always had an affinity for financial accounting. Professor Merkley also helped me explore what my future in accounting could look like if I decided to pursue being a researcher and provided me with helpful resources.
